The Filmmaker
My dad filmed weddings too, back when we lived in Australia. The Greek community there knew him, preferred him, and loved what he did.
In the 1990s, my dad filmed my second birthday. I have watched that video more times than I can count. Because I could see my parents when they were young. My aunt, my grandmother, my nouna and tata. Moments I would have never seen. I showed it to my tata and he asked me to send him the video, because his son was in it too, and he wanted to show him how naughty he was.
A photo stays still. A video is alive. In the video I could see my parents how they were when they were younger. How they smiled, their voice, their behaviour. My grandmother hadn't changed at all. I miss her.
That's why I do this. To share the feelings of happiness. To share what it feels like seeing another version of our parents, ourselves, our grandparents. Your wedding film isn't just for today. It's for the version of you, twenty years from now. And maybe, one day, for someone who wasn't even born yet.
Why did I name it Blackhill Films? My surname, Mavrovouniotis, translates to Blackhill. And Blackhill was the username my dad used when he played backgammon online.
It's all feelings.
How I Work
I don't direct your day — I document it. My job is to disappear into the background and come back with something that makes you feel emotions.
I am there to capture your day as it unfolds. Capture real moments as they are happening.
I want to be invisible. There but not there. I want to capture the most genuine moments.
